First Days

The first days of school are full of many emotions. There is an excitement for our students who are returning for another great year at Joyner. There are nerves for the new classroom, new teacher, new, new, new. We also have many new Joyner families joining us this year. It is these connections that I have found such sweet moments.
On the first day of school as I entered classrooms, I met many of our new children again. While talking with each child, I found myself joined by a “veteran” JYJ student. They easily joined the conversations and shared how this new neighbor was their newest friend. Several students shared how they had already invited their new friend to play at recess. Time and again, I continued to see our new faces warm and begin to glow that Joyner kid smile.
I am so grateful to the community of Joyner that builds in the students the kindness to be a welcoming family. Our teachers model and teach about our school family. They build connections on day one.
It has been a great start of year especially in these small moments of connections. Thank you, Jaguars, for continuing to be the spirit that makes the difference at Joyner.

The People Make the Place

Tuesday was a very welcomed day. The first teacher workday is usually filled with many hugs, happy sharing and excitement. There is an energy like no other as desks are moved, books begin to fill the shelves again, pillows are fluffed, and new pencils are sharpened. The hallways are empty all summer and now begin to become charmed again. And it is the people.

Our first day was filled with staff development. Teachers learning together. The teachers at Joyner are incredible and brave members of a learning community. There is such a high level of commitment to listen and share and believe in our common work. Always the center focus is on children and the impact we make in their lives. The commitment continues to move me deeply when I sit in the midst of this incredible group of teachers.

We are preparing and on Friday morning we look forward to welcoming our families. Meet the teacher is always filled with a buzz and excitement. Nervous hands are outweighed by the excitement of connecting.

And we look ahead to Monday when we all come together to learn and begin a new school year. Joyner will truly become Joyner on that first day of school.

We have staff members who creatively design our staff shirts each year. We have all come to anticipate what creative celebration of Joyner will be expressed on our shirts. Today when the t-shirts were delivered and as we turned to the back with full anticipation, the celebration was of the people in our building. The people truly do make this place. We look forward to working together to support the learning of our students. We look forward to continuing to build our community.

We look forward to welcoming our Joyner family!

Warming Up

What a busy week! ┬áThis is the last “quiet week” before our teachers are fully welcomed back to begin our school year. Although the official teacher workdays do not begin this year until next Tuesday, our teachers have been sneaking in right and left.

It is a fun time at Joyner. We find ourselves reconnecting after being away. Teachers are anxious to get into their rooms. Many stop by my room to offer ideas that are swirling from the summer. Others carry in carts of ideas literally. I am always inspired by our teachers that carry their “work” of teaching children with them everywhere they go.

If you have seen the streets and parking lot around Joyner looking full, know that it is full of a Joyner staff excited to welcome our students into the new year. They cannot wait to begin their work with our new classes.

Be sure to watch your mailboxes with our welcome back letter expected early next week. In this letter you will find it full of information. Much of the information is a reminder of the safety practices of arriving and dismissing from school. You will also find important dates to kick off the year. Please take the time to look over this information.

We look forward to welcoming our students to Meet the Teacher next Friday, the 21st of September from 8:00 to 9:30. You will find tables with PTA members, Transportation representatives, Before and After School Arrival registration, school supply order pick up and carpool numbers.

Until then, know that our building is buzzing with excitement and we are working hard to prepare for a great start of the year!
