Times are flying

I am so surprised at how quickly this year is flying. But I was even more surprised when I was in a classroom right after Spring Break. A fifth grader was chatting with me about how quickly the spring was flying and before he knew it, the end of school would be here. He was sad and amazed that he would be going to middle school very soon. And I just was surprised to hear how grown this young man was to talk about time flying.

I don’t ever remember feeling like time flew or stood still when I was growing up. As I got older sure, exams started to creep up on me. But as a child, I never thought of it.

And then I talked with another parent today who shared how her fifth grader was making plans to come back and visit Joyner even after he left. I loved hearing how he told his mom how he was always going to be a part of Joyner.

Absolutely, this is the truth about the home we have at Joyner. I find at each of our big family events that I meet many Joyner alum. I love the fact that our students see Joyner as home and they still feel connected.

As my first year at Joyner continues to fly by, I must express my deep gratitude again to the community for the gifts they give our children and staff in helping us create the community that we are! Time sure does fly when we are having fun!

Come, Let’s Laugh

I have seen some pretty silly things this week. Teachers laughing in the hallways with video cameras doing the strangest behaviors. Others looking for odd props. And some even dancing to music in the elevator. We are absolutely gearing up for a Night of Nonsense. And then we have this tragedy that our nation is facing once again.

As I process the most recent happenings of the world, I have come across a sentiment on social media from Mr. Rogers. Time again when tragedies arise, this message finds its way out to the public to remind us all that there is good in the world even amidst such bad. If you have not seen the quote, here is the length of it:

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things on the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’ To this day, especially in times of ‘disaster,’ I remember my mother’s words and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers – so many caring people in this world.” -Mr. Rogers

When I consider the laughter of this week, I think about the message that we are sending to our community with Night of Nonsense. I believe it is important for us all to take the time to laugh together and to be together as a community. I am glad we will have this opportunity to connect, support and help each other.

Everyday we have the joy of working with an incredible group of children. Our students at Joyner give us so much to be happy about and be hopeful for. We look forward to our event on Thursday when we can pause again and focus on the joy in Joyner!

Such an Honor

Last night I had the privilege to sit at the School Board meeting receiving the recognition of Joyner being recognized as a Magnet School of Distinction. As I listened and celebrated the schools around me as well, I considered how just this week we have so much to celebrate at Joyner.

This past weekend our school had TWO teams represented at the state level tournament for OM. We are so proud of all of our students who put timeless amounts of energy and passion into OM. And it truly is a work through time to see how we had TWO teams move forward from the regional competition. Our students showed very well! I am so impressed at how closely the competition ended. And even more inspired to hear from parents how proud they are of their behavior and positive spirit last Saturday representing Joyner.

This Friday, Joyner again will be recognized by the Advocates for Health in Action with the Brains and Body Award. Our school received the silver level and will share at the celebration some of the many things our school does for student health.

What wonderful ways Joyner is being honored this week! It is truly an honor to work with such incredible staff and students who create the learning environment at school. It is truly an honor to work with the families and community around Joyner who support and help and work tirelessly to creating learning and support for our students. Congratulations Joyner Family!
